Brushing And Flossing

Brushing And Flossing

Brushing and flossing properly are the bedrock upon which your oral health is built.

We can’t overstate the importance of regular checkups and professional cleanings.
However, without daily brushing and flossing; office visits will focus more on damage control than on enhancing your smile and overall health.

Brushing and Flossing: How Often Is Enough?

You need to brush and floss at least twice per day to maintain good oral health.
Brushing and flossing twice daily ensures that bacteria never becomes entrenched.

That lessens the possibility of tooth decay or periodontal diseases.

Brushing

Twice (or more) daily brushings with a fluoride toothpaste will help to prevent or control:

  • Tooth decay
  • Bad breath
  • Periodontal diseases
  • Staining

Always use a toothbrush with a small head since that can easily reach all areas of your teeth.
Be sure to select one that has soft or medium bristles to avoid scratching the enamel or traumatizing your gums.

Electric toothbrushes are great too – especially those with rotating heads that clean your teeth with a circular motion.

Flossing

There are some places that your tooth brush simply cannot reach no matter how thoroughly you brush.
Consequently, that is why it is important to also floss.

Flossing also lets you clean between the teeth.

Additionally, it cleans below the gum line, where bacteria, plaque and food debris can accumulate.

That causes decay, gingivitis and other unhealthy problems.

If you do not floss, you are failing to clean as much as 40% of the surface area of your teeth.
That’s like deciding that only brushing the front of your teeth will be sufficient.

Water flossing devices are also a great addition to your oral hygiene regimen.
But they should be used in addition to regular flossing and brushing, not in place of either.

Rigorous, daily, at-home care will prevent many dental problems.
