Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are prosthetic devices that replace missing teeth.
They “bridge” the gap between teeth, thus the name.
Besides “filling the gap”, dental bridges serve other important functions:
- Improving your smile
- Restoring the ability to chew and speak normally
- Maintaining or restoring facial symmetry
- Keeping other teeth from drifting out of position
Types of Dental Bridges
There are four main types of bridges.
Each is used in different circumstances.
The presence of healthy teeth (abutment teeth) adjacent to the area to be bridged determines the type used:
Traditional bridge
A traditional bridge fills the gap caused by a missing tooth.
Additionally, it uses crowns on the adjacent teeth as anchors for the false tooth, or “pontic”.
The traditional bridge is the most popular type of bridge since it is also the most common.
Maryland bridge
A Maryland bridge is anchored to healthy teeth on both sides of the area being bridged.
Your dentist will affix a metal or porcelain framework to the back of the abutment (adjacent) teeth; instead of affixing it to crowns on the abutment teeth.
Cantilever bridge
A Cantilever bridge is anchored to only one crown on one abutment tooth.
Cantilever bridges are used when there is only one healthy tooth adjacent to the area to be bridged.
Full Arch Replacement
Your dentist will suggest a full arch replacement when all teeth are missing or must be removed.
However, it is only one of several restorative options.
Because this involves a full, fixed bridge that will be anchored to dental implants; it is a more complex procedure.
The Placement Process
Having a bridge placed requires at least two visits.
Firstly, the abutment or anchor teeth will be prepared.
An impression is then made and sent to a dental lab.
Next, the lab will produce your bridge.
Finally, a temporary bridge is placed for interim wear.
On your next visit, the dentist inspects and adjusts your new bridge and then cements it into place.
Next, your dentist checks for proper fit and makes minor adjustments since they may be needed.
After Placement
Your dentist and your hygienist will make sure that you know how to take care of your new bridge because proper care is critical.
Proper cleaning – as well as regular dental checkups – ensure that your bridge lasts for many years.
