Dental X-rays
Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool in the quest for healthy teeth and gums.
Additionally, advances in technology have transformed the procedure and rendered it safer than ever before.
X-rays allow us to identify problems that are not evident during a visual exam, or which are at an early stage of development such as:
- Problems within a tooth or below the gum line
- Cysts, tumors or abscesses
- Problems between the teeth
- Abnormal development
- Bone loss
Dental X-Rays – How Often is Enough?
The frequency of X-rays will depend upon your particular circumstances and condition.
We perform a full range of X-rays if you are a new patient.
That allows us to gauge your overall oral health.
X-rays are taken once yearly after that, unless there are changes to monitor.
We’ll identify hidden problems, and establish a benchmark against which to measure treatments or on-going progress of health.
Aside from that, X-rays will be performed strictly as needed to ensure that you are receiving comprehensive care.
Are They Safe?
Some people express concern about the safety of dental X-rays, mainly because they don’t know about changes in the technology.
It is true that exposure to radiation should be limited.
But the truth is that radiation occurs naturally in our environment.
The exposure during a full series of dental X-rays is roughly equal to what you will experience from natural sources in a single day.
That exposure is further limited by the use of digital X-rays.
They emit less radiation and require much shorter exposure times because no film is being used.
The “dose” during digital X-rays is up to 90% lower than with traditional X-rays.
Also, shielding with leaded aprons, bibs or collars is no longer needed.
However, if you have medical implants or if you are pregnant; be sure to let us know so that we can take proper precautions.
Dental X-rays are used only when needed.
However, they are safe and valuable because they are a powerful tool in maintaining oral health.
