Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride treatments have been shown to be a safe and effective means for helping to preventing tooth decay.
A naturally occurring mineral, fluoride is found in small amounts in almost all foods; as well as in water.
It works on two levels:
Topical Fluoride Treatments
Topical fluoride is applied directly to the teeth using dental care products that have been augmented with fluoride.
Toothpaste, mouth rinses and fluoride solutions are common examples.
Once applied, fluoride enters the outer surface of the enamel of the teeth.
It helps to protect them from decay because it strengthens the enamel.
Most dentists recommend regular fluoride treatments as part of your dental care regimen.
Systemic Fluoride Treatments
Systemic fluoride strengthens the visible surfaces of the teeth as well as the surfaces that are below the gum line.
Due to the effectiveness of fluoride, most municipalities add fluoride to drinking water.
You can also use fluoride supplements in the form of drops, tablets or gels.
Most people get fluoride from their food and drinking water, however; it is not enough.
Consequently, most people also need fluoride supplementation.
Your dentist may suggest that you add fluoride to your daily regimen because treatments augment your regular exams and cleanings.
That is especially likely if:
- You consume a lot of sugary foods, drinks and carbohydrates
- Your teeth show signs of pitting
- You have receding gums, or exposed or sensitive root surfaces
- At-home oral care needs improvement
- There is an ongoing problem with tooth decay
Fluoride treatments are another tool in the fight against tooth decay.
However, they do not take the place of regular brushing and flossing.
Be sure to floss and brush at least twice daily – three times is better – and use an antiseptic rinse to kill bacteria.
Coupled with a balanced diet, reasonable sugar intake and regular visits to your dentist, fluoride supplements can help to ensure the health and appearance of your teeth.
