Preventative Dentistry
Preventative dentistry is the first line of defense against serious dental problems and other larger issues that can arise from poor oral health.
Although Preventative Dentistry can mean anything that promotes oral health, the following are some common preventative treatments.

Good oral heath starts at home with daily brushing and flossing.
Additionally, regular visits to your dentist for examinations, cleanings and diagnostic procedures will enhance your oral health.
At-home preventative care:
Brushing & Flossing
Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and be sure to brush thoroughly.
Many people brush for only 30-60 seconds, that is not enough time to sufficiently clean the teeth.
Aim to brush for at least 2 – 3 minutes, making sure to clean top and bottom, and front and back.
Replace your toothbrush at least 3 – 4 times per year, whenever the bristles begin to fray or flatten.
Do not neglect brushing your tongue – that will remove additional bacteria from your mouth.
Consequently, it will also help to freshen your breath.
Many people overlook the importance of flossing as part of their daily at-home oral hygiene.
Flossing between the teeth cleans areas that your toothbrush cannot reach.
Flossing removes food particles and plaque that would otherwise remain even after proper brushing.
If you skip flossing, you are failing to clean up to 40% of the surface area of your teeth!
In-office Preventative Dentistry:
Exams & Cleanings
Regular examinations by your dentist and hygienist can identify developing problems before they become severe.
They will evaluate your oral health, checking for signs of cavities, gum disease and oral cancer.
Your dentist detects developing problems before they become visually evident by using X-rays.
Your hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth with specialized tools to remove plaque, tartar and surface stains.
This cleaning not only improves the health and appearance of your teeth, but it also makes it possible to detect developing problems that might have been hidden before the cleaning.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally.
It is also found in many of the foods that we eat, and it is found in water.
It strengthens teeth and helps prevent cavities.
Dentists recognized that long ago.
Consequently, many cities even add fluoride to the water supply to promote dental health.
At home, you can use fluoride toothpaste.
Additionally, there are also fluoride rinses and treatments that you can use to strengthen your teeth.
During you regular office visits, your hygienist may perform professional fluoride treatments as part of your routine cleanings and preventative care.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin polymer (plastic) coatings that are applied to your teeth.
Sealants make smooth the rough areas of teeth that can trap plaque and bacteria that might be hard to remove with regular brushing and flossing.
They also add a layer of protection that helps to reduce buildup of tartar.
X-Rays
X-rays are still one of the most valuable diagnostic tools available.
They allow us to see problems that are either hidden from view, or in such an early stage of development that they are not yet visible.
And yes, they are safe.
Modern X-ray technology (digital radiography) exposes you to only a fraction of the radiation once required.
Dental Treatment Plans
Your dentist will present a detailed treatment plan if problems are detected during your visit.
The goal is to protect or restore your oral health at the earliest possible indication of trouble.
The dentist and hygienist will customized and prioritize your treatment plan based upon urgency, because needs and cost are significant factors.
